It was “19(90) Somethin’” when Grand Ole Opry member Mark Wills rose from Atlanta’s Buckboard to become one of country music’s most consistent hitmakers, releasing 19 Billboard-charting singles across seven albums. Along the way, he earned Gold and Platinum certifications and delivered some of the genre’s most enduring hits of the past 25 years.
Wills broke through in 1996 with his debut single “Jacob’s Ladder,” the first of eight Top 10 hits, followed by his self-titled debut album, praised by Entertainment Weekly for its mix of sly wit, heartfelt ballads, and emotionally rich baritone. A string of late-’90s successes—including “Places I’ve Never Been,” “I Do (Cherish You),” “Don’t Laugh at Me,” and the No. 1 smash “Wish You Were Here”—cemented his status and earned him the ACM Award for Top New Male Vocalist in 1998. His signature hit “19 Somethin’,” a six-week No. 1, was certified RIAA Gold.
