Kim Ng Biography
Kim Ng is a prominent executive in professional sports, recognized as the first female general manager in major North American men's professional team sports and the first East Asian American to lead a Major League Baseball team as general manager of the Miami Marlins. Ng is a graduate of the University of Chicago and began her career in baseball as an intern with the White Sox, later advancing to assistant director of baseball operations. She joined the Yankees, becoming the youngest assistant general manager in Major League Baseball at age 29 and only the second woman to hold that position with a major league club. During nine years with the Dodgers as vice president and assistant general manager, Ng contributed to player transactions, trades, free-agent signings, and oversaw arbitration, pro scouting, medical, and video departments.
Ng has achieved several professional milestones, including being the first woman to present a salary arbitration case at the major league level and the highest-ranking Asian American woman in baseball as Major League Baseball's senior vice president of baseball operations. As a baseball executive with the Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees, Ng played a key role in nine postseason appearances, six League Championship Series, and three World Championships. She interviewed for general manager positions multiple times before being hired by the Marlins, a role she described as a significant honor.
Under Ng's leadership, the Marlins achieved one of the franchise's top winning percentages and secured a full-season postseason berth after a two-decade gap. She became the first female general manager in Major League Baseball history to lead a team to the playoffs. Ng has received recognition from Sports Business Journal, Baseball America, Asia Society, the Women's Sports Foundation, and the ALS Association of Greater New York. She was also appointed to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition.
Ng played college softball for the University of Chicago and later joined Athletes Unlimited as a senior advisor for the Athletes Unlimited Softball League. She was responsible for the league's initial conception and development, assembling a group of athletes, managers, and coaches with multiple Olympic medals, NCAA championships, and All-American honors. Throughout her career, Ng has addressed the challenges of working in a male-dominated industry and is known for her perspectives on leadership, resilience, and advancing diversity in professional sports.
