Keegan-Michael Key Biography
Keegan-Michael Key is an Emmy, Peabody, and Webby Award-winning actor, comedian, writer, and producer whose career spans sketch comedy, film, theater, and voice acting. Key earned a bachelor's degree in theater from University of Detroit Mercy and a master's from Pennsylvania State University before becoming a mainstage cast member at Detroit's Second City improv theater and later joining the Chicago Second City location. In 2004, Key was cast on the sketch comedy series "MADtv" alongside Jordan Peele, where he played recurring characters such as Eugene Struthers and Coach Hines. His time on "MADtv" highlighted his skill for impressions, including portrayals of Barack Obama and Sidney Poitier.
Key and Jordan Peele co-created and co-starred in the sketch series "Key & Peele," for which he received one Primetime Emmy Award from 10 nominations. The series used humor to address issues of racial identity, bigotry, and cultural stereotyping, earning a Peabody Award for public service and achievement in electronic media. "Key & Peele" became both a critical and commercial success, with Key's characters like Luther the Anger Translator gaining widespread recognition. Key was named among Time Magazine's Most Influential People and Entertainment Weekly's Entertainers of the Year.
Key has expanded into film, television, theater, and children's content while maintaining a reputation for thoughtful, character-driven humor. He has appeared in films including "The Lego Movie," "Keanu," "Toy Story 4," "Wonka," and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." His television credits include leading roles in Apple TV+'s Emmy-nominated "Schmigadoon!", Netflix's "The Prom," Hulu's "Reboot," and hosting "Saturday Night Live" as the first "MADtv" cast member to do so.
Key made his Off-Broadway debut in Hamlet with Oscar Isaac and his Broadway debut in Steve Martin's "Meteor Shower" with Amy Schumer. His work has garnered him 10 Primetime Emmy nominations, with one win, along with a Peabody Award and two Jeff Awards for his time at The Second City. Key co-authored "The History of Sketch Comedy: A Journey Through the Art and Craft of Humor" with Elle Key and narrated the Audible podcast version, which won the Webby Award for Best Writing in a Podcast.
Key has demonstrated range across multiple entertainment platforms, including voice acting as B-127 (Bumblebee) in the animated prequel "Transformers One," appearing in "Dear Santa" with Jack Black, and voicing roles in "IF." He was also cast in the Amazon MGM Studios crime thriller "Play Dirty," based on Donald E. Westlake's Parker novels.
