Katie Hnida Biography
Katie Hnida is an athlete and advocate recognized as the first woman to score points in an NCAA Division I-A college football game, the highest level of college football. Hnida began her football career at Chatfield Senior High School in Littleton, Colorado, where she played varsity football for four years. As a senior, she was named Colorado Sportswoman of the Year and was featured in Teen People Magazine as the Number One Teen Most Likely to Change the World. While attending the University of Colorado, Hnida became the first woman to make the football team before transferring to the University of New Mexico, where she played three seasons for the Lobos.
At New Mexico, Hnida became the first woman to play in a Division I-A bowl game during the Las Vegas Bowl against UCLA. She became the first woman to score in a Division I-A game by kicking two extra points against Texas State University in a New Mexico win. Her shoes and uniform are displayed in the College Football Hall of Fame. Hnida continued her football career after college, becoming the first woman to play professional arena football with the Ft. Wayne Firehawk. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of New Mexico with a degree in psychology.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Hnida detailed an allegation of rape by a Colorado teammate and described enduring verbal abuse and molestation by other teammates. She has since become an advocate, educator, and speaker for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Hnida has delivered keynote addresses at fundraising events and has spoken at Mariska Hargitay's Joyful Heart Foundation events alongside Hilary Swank and Alec Baldwin.
Hnida travels nationally to share her athletic story and her experiences as a survivor of sexual assault, frequently speaking at colleges and universities to educate and raise awareness. She has worked with organizations supporting victims of assault, including The Joyful Heart Foundation and the Voices and Faces Project. Hnida has appeared on television and news programs such as Larry King Live, The Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, and ESPN, as well as in national publications including Sports Illustrated, Glamour, People, The New York Times, USA Today, and Washington Post. Her memoir, "Still Kicking: My Journey as the First Woman to Play Division I Football," published by Scribner, chronicles her experiences as a pioneering athlete and advocate in sports and survivor advocacy.
