Kathy Griffin Biography
Kathy Griffin is an American comedian and actress known for her confessional commentary on celebrity culture. Griffin began her career with the Groundlings, an improvisational sketch comedy troupe, before gaining recognition in the alternative comedy scene. She first gained widespread attention as the acerbic colleague of Brooke Shields' character on the NBC sitcom "Suddenly Susan." Influenced by comedians such as Joan Rivers and Don Rickles, Griffin is recognized for her conversational style and controversial takes on celebrities, religion, and sexuality.
Griffin's career expanded with her Bravo reality series "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," which became a ratings success and earned her two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Reality Program. Her debut comedy album, "For Your Consideration," made her the first female comedian to debut at the top of the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart. Each of Griffin's albums has received Grammy nominations, with a win for "Calm Down Gurrl." For Bravo, Griffin recorded 16 television specials, breaking the Guinness World Record for the most aired TV specials by any comedian. She also released her autobiography, "Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin," which reached the top of The New York Times Best Seller list.
Griffin is an advocate for marginalized communities and is active in LGBT rights, including causes such as same-sex marriage and the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." She is also known for co-hosting CNN's New Year's Eve broadcast with Anderson Cooper. Griffin's willingness to address controversial topics has established her as a distinctive voice in American comedy.
Griffin has publicly addressed personal challenges, including being ostracized and investigated after posting a satirical photo involving Donald Trump, overcoming lung cancer, and being diagnosed with PTSD. Surgery to remove part of her lung affected her vocal cords, but a vocal cord implant restored her voice. Griffin is cancer free and in recovery from addiction.
Griffin has incorporated these experiences into her stand-up performances, including her "My Life on the PTSD-List" tour, which included a performance at Carnegie Hall, and her "New Face, New Tour," which featured shows across the United States and Canada. The Emmy Award-winning comedian continues to share candid health updates and remains known for her resilience and unfiltered honesty in the comedy industry.
