Juan Martín del Potro Biography
Juan Martín del Potro is an Argentine tennis player recognized for his powerful forehand, commanding serve, and competitive temperament. Del Potro quickly became a significant presence on the ATP Tour, capturing four ATP Tour singles titles and achieving a 23-match winning streak early in his career. He became the first player in ATP history to win his first four career titles in as many tournaments.
Del Potro's career reached a defining moment at the US Open, where he became the first player to defeat both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at a Grand Slam, overcoming Nadal in the semifinals and Federer in a five-set final. This victory made him only the second Argentine male to win a Grand Slam singles title and, at the time, the only man outside the "Big Three" to claim a Grand Slam title in a span of more than seven years. Del Potro has been named Argentina's Sportsman of the Year multiple times and received the ATP Comeback Player of the Year Award on two occasions.
Throughout his career, del Potro demonstrated resilience, returning to top-level competition after four wrist surgeries. He secured his first Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells, reached a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the ATP rankings, and advanced to another US Open final. On the Olympic stage, del Potro earned a bronze medal at the London Olympics and a silver medal at the Rio Olympics. He also contributed to Argentina's first Davis Cup title.
A severe knee injury marked the final chapter of del Potro's playing career, leading to multiple surgeries and a significant drop in world rankings. He officially retired from professional tennis in Buenos Aires. In his farewell, del Potro played an exhibition called "The Last Challenge" against Novak Djokovic in Buenos Aires, concluding his career with a symbolic gesture by placing his bandana on the net. With 22 ATP Tour singles titles, including a Grand Slam title at the US Open and a Masters 1000 crown at the BNP Paribas Open, del Potro is known for his perseverance and impact on the sport of tennis.
