Joseph L. Edwards Biography
Joseph L. Edwards is an artist, educator, and social activist whose career encompasses theater, film, television, and education. As an international teaching artist, Edwards has demonstrated the role of the arts in education to educators, artists, and students worldwide. His work as an actor and playwright has been featured on Broadway, in film, and on television. An alumnus of Syracuse University's Crouse College of Fine Arts, Edwards has developed a career that integrates artistic practice with a commitment to social justice.
Edwards's theatrical work is rooted in Black theater. He is a three-time AUDELCO Award winner for artistic achievement in Black Theater, recognized for his Off-Broadway production of "Fly," which he wrote and starred in. His stage adaptation of Claude Brown's autobiography, "Manchild In The Promised Land," was produced Off-Broadway at American Place Theatre, nominated for an AUDELCO Award, and performed for students in New York City. Edwards's one-man show toured to more than 15,000 students, including audiences in Accra, Ghana. His acting credits include appearances in the film "Bad Company" with Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins, guest roles on "Law and Order," "Law and Order SVU," and "Rescue Me," and a Broadway appearance in Regina Taylor's "Drowning Crow" with Alfre Woodard and Anthony Mackey. He also portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. in the St. Louis Black Repertory Company's production of "The Meeting" at the Kennedy Center.
In addition to his performing career, Edwards is an advocate for racial justice and reparations. His research on reparations is reflected in his Truth and Reconciliation Project and the play "Reparations." His work "Reparations: A Play with Music" was a semi-finalist in the Eugene O'Neill Musical Theatre Conference. Edwards received a Research and Development Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts for The Reparations Project.
Edwards founded The African Diaspora Arts and Sciences Institute, which aims to highlight the contributions of African people through the performing arts. He has served as an educational leader for more than three decades, working in New York City, Washington, DC, Argentina, Russia, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, and Africa. Nationally, Edwards works as a growth mindset coach, diversity, inclusion and equity leader, and social activist for reparations. Through his work, Edwards merges artistic storytelling with social advocacy, engaging audiences and communities globally.
