John Cho Biography
John Cho is a Korean American actor known for his work in film, television, and theater, with a career spanning more than two decades. Cho began his acting journey with East West Players, an Asian American theater company, before transitioning to screen roles in projects such as "Wag the Dog," "Bowfinger," and "Better Luck Tomorrow." He gained widespread recognition with his role in the comedy "American Pie" and further established his presence in Hollywood with "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," a film that contributed to conversations about diversity in leading roles.
Cho starred as Hikaru Sulu in the "Star Trek" franchise reboot and has appeared in a range of genres, including the indie drama "Columbus," the thriller "Searching," and the horror film "The Grudge." In television, Cho has held lead roles in series such as "FlashForward," "Off Centre," and "The Afterparty," and recurring roles in "Sleepy Hollow" and "Difficult People." He played Henry Higgs in the sitcom "Selfie," becoming the first Asian American actor cast as a romantic lead in a romantic comedy series, and was the first to headline a mainstream Hollywood thriller with "Searching," earning a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.
Cho starred in the live-action Netflix series "Cowboy Bebop," based on the Japanese animated series, and executive produced Erick Oh's animated short film "Namoo," which appeared on the Oscar Short List and was nominated for Best Special Production and Best Character Animation at the Annie Awards. He has provided voice work for the Oscar-nominated animated film "Mirai" and the Sony Pictures Animation film "Wish Dragon." Cho also joined the Disney+ spy thriller series "Tempest," playing the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State.
In addition to his acting career, Cho authored the middle-grade book "Troublemaker," which appeared on The New York Times and IndieBound bestseller lists. The novel explores the 1992 Los Angeles riots through the perspective of a Korean American 12-year-old. Throughout his career, Cho has contributed to discussions on representation, identity, and the Asian American experience in the entertainment industry.
