Jerry Cantrell Biography
Jerry Cantrell is prominently recognized as the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and main songwriter of the rock band Alice in Chains. He has also established himself as a solo artist with albums such as "Boggy Depot" (1998), "Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2" (2002), "Brighten" (2021), and "I Want Blood" (2024). Cantrell's contribution to the music industry was acknowledged by Metal Hammer in 2006 when he was named "Riff Lord." Furthermore, Guitar World Magazine acknowledged his talent for guitar playing by ranking him 38th in their "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists of All Time" list in 2004, and 37th in their "Greatest Guitar Player of All Time" list in 2012. His guitar solo in "Man in the Box" was ranked No. 77 in Guitar World's "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" in 2008.
Over the years, Cantrell's work with Alice in Chains has merited nine Grammy Award nominations. Additionally, he has contributed to soundtracks for films such as "The Cable Guy" (1996), "John Wick: Chapter 2" (2017), and "Dark Nights: Metal" (2018). Cantrell's presence in the film industry extends beyond his music contributions, having made cameo appearances in films like "Jerry Maguire" (1996), "Rock Slyde" (2009), "Deadwood: The Movie" (2019), and "Sinners" (2025). Alice in Chains was signed to Columbia Records on September 11, 1989, and was selected as the opening act for Guns N' Roses during their 2016 reunion tour. As a testament to their success, Alice in Chains has sold over 20 million records worldwide, with over 14 million in the US.
