Jamie Anderson Biography
Jamie Anderson is an American and Canadian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, author, and LGBTQ activist recognized for her contributions to women's music. Anderson has performed original songs in hundreds of venues across four countries, including 47 U.S. states. Proficient on guitar, ukulele, and mandolin, Anderson is known for an expressive soprano and a musical style that blends folk, country, and jazz influences. She began touring the United States in the late 1980s and was voted Favorite New Performer by Hot Wire, later performing at numerous women's music festivals.
With 12 albums, Anderson has established a following both on tour and online. Her YouTube channel has attracted 65,000 subscribers, with several videos reaching viral status. Anderson has appeared at folk and women's music festivals, coffeehouses, colleges, and pride events, and has been featured on CNN, where a performance clip aired repeatedly over one day. Her album, "The Curves are Still There," features jazz-inspired tracks, including a title song addressing body image.
As an author, Anderson has written the memoir "Drive All Night," which offers insight into the life of an independent musician. Her book, "An Army of Lovers: Women's Music of the Seventies and Eighties," is regarded as a comprehensive account of the women's music movement that preceded Lilith Fair and the riot grrrl movement. Anderson's third book, "Drive All Day: Because I'm Too Old to Drive All Night," continues her exploration of life as a touring artist. She has contributed chapters, articles, and reviews to publications such as Acoustic Guitar, Curve, and SingOut!
A touring performer since the 1980s and an out lesbian since the 1970s, Anderson has consistently advocated for LGBTQ visibility and community. Her speaking topics include "Women's Music: Before Lilith Fair and Riot Grrrls," "Stories from the Road: The Life of a Touring Singer-Songwriter," and "Coming Out Lesbian in the Seventies." Presentations may include PowerPoint, live music, book readings, and audience Q&A. Anderson also supports the music community by teaching music online, on YouTube, at arts centers, festivals, and in her studio.
