Howie Carr Biography
Howie Carr is an American journalist, author, and conservative radio talk-show host based in Boston, recognized as one of New England's enduring media figures. Carr hosts "The Howie Carr Show," which originates from studios in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and is broadcast on weekdays on WRKO in Boston, reaching audiences throughout New England. In addition to his radio work, Carr writes three columns a week for the Boston Herald. His daily broadcast is syndicated on more than 20 stations, establishing him as a widely heard voice in the region's talk radio landscape.
Carr began his journalism career as a reporter for the Winston-Salem Journal before returning to New England as assistant city editor for the Boston Herald American. He served as Boston City Hall bureau chief and later as State House bureau chief for the Herald American. Carr also worked as a political reporter for Boston area television stations WGBH, WLVI, and WNEV, earning an Emmy nomination for his reporting. His coverage of Boston politics, including then-Mayor Kevin White, was noted for its persistence and depth.
As a journalist for the Boston Herald, Carr is known for his investigative reporting and direct style. He received the National Magazine Award for essays and criticism. Carr was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame and has been ranked by Talkers Magazine among America's top radio talk show hosts. He has appeared as himself in the feature film "A Civil Action."
Carr is the author of several books on Boston organized crime, including the New York Times bestsellers "The Brothers Bulger" and "Hitman." "The Brothers Bulger" remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 11 weeks, and "Hitman: The Untold Story of Johnny Martorano: Whitey Bulger's Enforcer and the Most Feared Gangster in the Underworld" also achieved bestseller status. Carr's reporting on organized crime figures such as Whitey Bulger has been featured on 60 Minutes. He is also the author of "Paper Boy," a memoir detailing his experiences in print journalism, radio, and television.
Carr's radio show blends politics, news, opinion, guest interviews, and listener interactions. He is known for conducting interviews with politicians, authors, newsmakers, and celebrities, and for his coverage of the intersection of crime, politics, and media. Carr's investigative approach and experience have contributed to his long-standing presence in New England media.
