Gene Steratore Biography
Gene Steratore is a rules analyst for CBS Sports and a former National Football League (NFL) American football official. A referee in the NFL from 2003 until his retirement in June 2018, he also officiated NCAA basketball for the Big Ten, Atlantic-10 and Big East conferences. His most notable accomplishments include officiating the 2005 AFC Championship Game, the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and 2009, and Super Bowl LII.
Born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, Steratore entered the NFL as a field judge, and in the 2006 season he was promoted to referee along with Jerome Boger following Tom White and Bernie Kukar’s retirement. In 2010 he was chosen as the Super Bowl XLIV alternate referee at the game held in Miami, and eight years later he was chosen as the Super Bowl LII referee.
After retiring in June 2018, Steratore quickly moved into a successful media career joining CBS Sports as a rules analyst, taking over from Mike Carey who was fired after the 2015 season. Steratore also contributes to NCAA March Madness on CBS/TBS/TNT/truTV and to College Basketball on CBS. Away from the world of sport, Steratore has been the co-owner of Steratore Sanitary Supply in Washington, Pennsylvania with his brother, NFL back judge Tony Steratore. The brothers founded the company in 1988 and currently supply janitorial products to over 300 companies.
