Ellen Kullman Biography
Ellen J. Kullman is a business executive with a career spanning science, technology, and advanced manufacturing. Kullman holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Tufts University and a Master of Science in management from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Before joining DuPont, she worked for Westinghouse and General Electric. Kullman began her 27-year tenure at DuPont as a marketing manager for the medical imaging business, advancing through various leadership roles.
The DuPont board elected Kullman president and director, later naming her chief executive officer, making her the first woman to lead the company. As CEO, Kullman guided DuPont through a transformation, shifting the company away from commoditized businesses and focusing on market-driven science and innovation. She led growth in the Safety and Protection business portfolio and oversaw the introduction of DuPont Industrial Biosciences and DuPont Sustainable Solutions business units. Kullman has been recognized by Fortune and Forbes for her leadership in the business sector.
Kullman serves as chair of the board at Carbon, a privately held 3D printing company, and previously held the roles of president and CEO. Carbon is recognized for its manufacturing partnerships with Adidas, Ford, and Ikea, and for its Digital Light Synthesis technology, which advances product innovation in additive manufacturing and digital manufacturing.
Kullman is a director at Goldman Sachs Group, chairing its Public Responsibilities Committee, and serves on the board of Dell Technologies, chairing the Nominating and Governance Committee and acting as lead independent director. She has also chaired the U.S.-China Business Council, participated in the U.S.-India CEO Forum, and served on the executive committee of the Business Council. Kullman is a member of the National Academy of Engineering for her leadership in business growth and transformation in science and engineering.
Kullman has received the International Palladium Medal from the Société de Chimie Industrielle, the Engineering Leader of the Year Award, the Pete du Pont Individual Freedom Award, and Delaware's Order of the First State. She holds honorary Doctor of Science degrees from the University of Edinburgh and Tufts University. Kullman was named Independent Director of the Year by Corporate Board Member for her board leadership at United Technologies. She co-chairs the Paradigm for Parity coalition and is an advocate for gender equity in corporate leadership, as well as a prominent voice in digital manufacturing and innovation.
