Eileen Fisher Biography
Eileen Fisher is an American fashion designer and entrepreneur known for her influential role in women's clothing and sustainable fashion. After working as an interior designer and graphic artist, Fisher founded Eileen Fisher Inc. with $350 in startup capital. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese kimono, she developed a "system of shapes"—timeless, interchangeable pieces designed for simplicity, comfort, and versatility. This foundational vision continues to define the brand, which has expanded into a company with more than 56 retail locations across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom and annual revenues approaching $500 million.
Fisher has been recognized for advancing sustainable and ethical practices in the fashion industry. She introduced the "Renew" take-back program, a circular initiative that collects, cleans, repairs, and resells previously worn garments, resulting in the collection of more than two million pieces. The company also operates Waste No More, an in-house studio that repurposes damaged fabrics into home décor, accessories, and art. After observing environmental challenges in overseas factories, Fisher established an internal Sustainable Design Team to reduce the brand's environmental impact throughout its supply chain. Through an employee stock ownership plan, she sold a significant stake in the company to her predominantly female staff, positioning the brand as a leader in progressive business structures within the fashion sector.
Fisher's dedication to women's empowerment is reflected in her founding of the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on developing leadership skills in young women through self-empowerment and community engagement. The institute has grown from a small pilot program to serving hundreds of participants annually. Fisher also launched "Women Together," a series of workshops and speaking engagements aimed at fostering women's voices and connections.
Fisher has received recognition for her work in design, sustainability, and social responsibility, including the Positive Change Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Designer of the Year from the American Apparel & Footwear Association, and an Honorary Award at the Parsons Benefit. She has been named to the Forbes 50 Over 50 Visionary list, honored as the FIT Changemaker in Corporate Sustainability, and received the Pioneer Award at the CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards. Eileen Fisher Inc. is a certified B Corporation, reflecting its commitment to social and environmental accountability. Fisher has shared her expertise on platforms such as NPR's "How I Built This" and at Fast Company Innovation Festival, contributing to conversations on business, sustainability, and women's leadership.
