Duane Lee Chapman, widely known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, is an American television personality, bounty hunter, and former bail bondsman. Chapman's life story traces a path from a troubled youth to a prominent figure in law enforcement and reality television. Convicted of first-degree murder at age 23 and sentenced to five years in prison, Chapman used his time behind bars to reflect and later pursued a career in bounty hunting after his release. With limited prospects for traditional employment, Chapman entered the bail bonds and bounty hunting industry, ultimately becoming a leading practitioner in the field. By his own account, he has arrested more than 10,000 fugitives throughout his career.
Chapman gained international attention by capturing Max Factor cosmetics heir Andrew Luster, who had fled the United States during his trial on multiple charges, including rape. Chapman and his team apprehended Luster in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, an event that brought significant media coverage and led to his television career. Chapman starred in the reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter" on A&E, which followed his work tracking and apprehending fugitives. After the conclusion of that series, Chapman appeared in "Dog and Beth: On the Hunt" on CMT, alongside his wife and business partner, the late Beth Chapman. He later appeared in "Dog's Most Wanted" on WGN America and competed on season 7 of "The Masked Singer" as Armadillo, further expanding his presence in mainstream entertainment.
In addition to his television work, Chapman is a New York Times bestselling author. He published his autobiography, "You Can Run But You Can't Hide," followed by "Where Mercy Is Shown, Mercy Is Given." Chapman also released "Nine Lives and Counting: A Bounty Hunter's Journey to Faith, Hope, and Redemption," a book reflecting his personal faith and spiritual transformation. He is involved in crime prevention advocacy and operates the Light Up the Darkness ministry with his wife, Francie.
