Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald Biography
Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald is a clinician, scientific author, conservationist, and stand-up comedian recognized in American veterinary medicine. Fitzgerald holds a PhD in comparative endocrinology from the University of Colorado and a veterinary degree from Colorado State University. He has published more than 150 scientific journal articles and 41 veterinary textbook chapters, contributing to the advancement of veterinary science and animal health. Fitzgerald practices at VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver and serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver, where he has written extensively on emergency medicine, reptile medicine, and exotic animal care.
Fitzgerald is widely known for his eleven seasons as a featured veterinarian on Animal Planet's "Emergency Vets" and "E-Vet Interns." On these television shows, he worked as a general practitioner specializing in the treatment of exotic animals, particularly reptiles. He also hosted the Animal House segment on Denver Channel 2's Daybreak at the Deuce. Fitzgerald lectures at veterinary conferences and colleges nationally and internationally, focusing on toxicology, emergency medicine, and the care of exotic species. He received the Spirit Award of the Specialists in Private Practice and Hills Dog Food for Specialist of the Year in private practice.
Before his veterinary career, Fitzgerald worked as security for musical acts including Elvis Presley, The Who, Bob Marley, Willie Nelson, George Clinton, and The Rolling Stones. A conversation with Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones prompted Fitzgerald to pursue veterinary medicine full time.
Fitzgerald has performed stand-up comedy in Denver since 1986, opening for performers such as Joan Rivers, Bob Hope, Kevin Nealon, Brian Regan, Norm McDonald, Diana Ross, and The Temptations. His comedy is informed by his experiences in veterinary medicine, appealing to both general audiences and animal enthusiasts.
Fitzgerald's conservation work is affiliated with Denver Zoo, where he has contributed to land acquisition efforts for conservation campaigns in Mongolia and other locations. He has written 61 book chapters for veterinary texts and contributes animal health columns to various magazines. He is the author of "It Started With a Turtle: One Man's Life on a Blue & Green Planet," a memoir chronicling his career in veterinary medicine, comedy, and wildlife conservation. Fitzgerald's career reflects a combination of scientific expertise, animal care, and public engagement in veterinary medicine and wildlife conservation.
