Dr. Colleen Hacker Biography
Dr. Colleen M. Hacker, Ph.D., is a mental performance specialist with extensive experience in American sports psychology and coaching. Hacker has served as a member of the United States coaching staff for six Olympic Games as a mental skills coach and performance psychology specialist. During these Olympic Games, her teams have won four Gold Medals and two Silver Medals. She is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant, a member of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry, and a Fellow in the National Academies of Practice.
Hacker began her national team service with the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, followed by a decade on staff with USA Hockey, culminating in the team's Gold Medal performance at the PyeongChang Olympic Games. During her 12-year tenure with USA Soccer, the national team won the first Gold Medal awarded in women's soccer at the Atlanta Olympic Games and secured a victory over China in the 1999 World Cup. As an assistant coach, the national team also won a Silver Medal at the Sydney Olympic Games and a second Gold Medal in Athens. The team went on to earn a third Gold Medal at the Beijing Games, where Hacker also served as the mental skills coach for USA Field Hockey. Serving as the mental skills coach for USA Hockey, Hacker was a member of her fifth Olympic coaching staff as Team USA won a Silver Medal in Sochi, followed by a shoot-out victory to win the United States' first Gold Medal in 20 years during the Games in South Korea.
In addition to her work with national and Olympic teams, Hacker has served as the mental skills coach to professional, international, and Olympic athletes across sports including Major League Baseball, the NFL, MLS, the PGA, LPGA, swimming, basketball, lacrosse, speed skating, track and field, and tennis. She has also worked with Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 corporations, as well as civic groups and organizations. With more than 30 years of experience in higher education, she is a professor of kinesiology specializing in sport and exercise psychology. Hacker has served on the coaching staff for more than 10 World Championship events in soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse.
Hacker is a frequent speaker and consultant, having delivered over 200 professional presentations and published more than 45 articles, chapters, and two books. Her book, "Catch Them Being Good" (Penguin Books), co-authored with soccer coach Tony DiCicco, is widely used in coaching education. Her book, "Achieving Excellence: Mastering Mindset for Peak Performance in Sport and Life," is used by corporate leaders and athletes. The Olympic Channel featured Hacker's work in an episode titled "Gold Medal Entourage: The Mastermind Behind Olympic Success," and she has appeared on national television outlets including CNN, NBC, FOX Sports, ESPN, and Discovery Channel.
Hacker has received professional awards including the Distinguished Professional Practice Award from AASP, the American Psychological Association's Presidential Citation, the Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award, the NAGWS Pathfinder Award, and the NASPE Inspiration Award. She has been inducted into seven athletic and coaching Hall of Fame organizations, including being the first woman inducted into the National Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame by United Soccer Coaches. ESPNW named Hacker as one of 30 women in the country who "change the way sports are played." Her record of championship success, combined with her academic background and public speaking experience, positions Hacker as a leading voice in peak performance and mental skills training.
