Dorothy Butler Gilliam Biography
Dorothy Butler Gilliam is recognized in American journalism as the first African American female reporter hired by The Washington Post. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Gilliam became known for her work in journalism, advocacy for women's rights, civil rights activism, and authorship. She began her journalism career with a part-time position at The Louisville Defender, a leading Black newspaper, before working as a reporter for the Tri-State Defender and as associate editor of JET Magazine. Gilliam later attended graduate school at Columbia University, where she was the only Black woman in her class.
Gilliam's reporting career included coverage of major civil rights events in the segregated South, such as the Little Rock Nine and the integration of Arkansas public schools. At The Washington Post, she started as a reporter on the City Desk, covering significant stories including James Meredith's integration of the University of Mississippi. She later wrote a regular column in the Metro section, focusing on education, politics, and race, and became the newspaper's first Black woman assistant editor, correspondent, and columnist.
In addition to her work at The Washington Post, Gilliam contributed to the transformation of the journalism industry by supporting diversity and mentorship. She helped establish the Robert Maynard Institute for Journalism Education and served as board chair. Gilliam also served as president of the National Association of Black Journalists and taught journalism at American University and Howard University. At The George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, she founded Prime Movers Media, a journalism mentorship program for underserved urban students. Gilliam authored "Paul Robeson, All American," a biography of the athlete, artist, and political activist.
Gilliam published the memoir "Trailblazer: A Pioneering Journalist's Fight to Make the Media Look More Like America," which details her experiences in journalism and her efforts to increase diversity in media. Her work has been featured in national news media, including an interview on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Gilliam has also supported journalism colleagues through philanthropic efforts, including a donation to a fund for laid-off Washington Post Guild members.
Gilliam's contributions to journalism have been recognized with several honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington Press Club Foundation, induction into the Society of Professional Journalists Hall of Fame by the Washington, D.C., Chapter, the NABJ Hall of Fame, and the University of Missouri Honor Medal in Journalism. She received the W.M. Kiplinger Distinguished Contributions to Journalism Award from the National Press Foundation. Gilliam is a member of the Washington, D.C., and Lincoln University Hall of Fame and has contributed to the History Makers oral history collection of African American leaders.
