Demetri Martin Biography
Demetri Martin is a comedian, actor, writer, director, cartoonist, and musician known for his deadpan delivery, use of musical instruments, and satirical cartoons in stand-up comedy. Martin began developing his comedic style on New York City's stand-up circuit after graduating from Yale. He attended NYU School of Law on a full scholarship but left with one year remaining to pursue comedy full time.
Martin's early career included winning the Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for his one-man show "If I," which blended observational humor, drawings, and one-liners. He later performed "Dr. Earnest Parrot Presents Demetri Martin" at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, earning Australia's Barry Award for most outstanding show. Martin shared a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program with the writing team of Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and they won a Writers Guild of America Award for Comedy/Variety (Including Talk) – Series. On Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," Martin appeared as senior youth correspondent, satirizing the show's college-aged demographic.
In television and film, Martin hosted and starred in the Comedy Central sketch series "Important Things With Demetri Martin." He played the lead role in Ang Lee's film "Taking Woodstock" and made his directorial debut with the comedy-drama "Dean," which he also wrote and starred in. "Dean" received recognition at the Gasparilla International Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. Martin voiced Ice Bear in Cartoon Network's "We Bare Bears" and narrated its prequel spinoff "We Baby Bears."
As an author and illustrator, Martin wrote "This Is a Book" and "Point Your Face at This," both of which appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. His stand-up performances are known for incorporating music and visual elements, including drawings on a sketchboard, and he plays instruments such as guitar, harmonica, keyboard, and tambourine. His comedy specials, including "Demetri Martin. Person.," "Live (At the Time)," and "The Overthinker" on Netflix, have reached a global audience.
Martin continues to create new work across stand-up, television, and film, maintaining a presence in live performance with tours such as the "Quick Draw Tour." His multidisciplinary approach and intellectual humor have established him as a prominent figure in comedy, television, and film.
