David Wright Biography
David Wright is a former professional baseball third baseman who spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the New York Mets. Selected by the Mets in the MLB draft, Wright made his debut at Shea Stadium and quickly became a key figure in the franchise's history. In his first full season, Wright led the team in batting average, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, RBIs, and doubles, posting a .306 average with 27 home runs, 99 runs, 102 RBIs, and 42 doubles.
Wright holds numerous Mets franchise records, including career hits, runs scored, RBIs, walks, total bases, and WAR for position players. He finished in the top 10 in National League MVP voting four times, with a peak season that included a fourth-place finish. Wright's career accolades include seven All-Star selections, two Gold Glove Awards for defensive performance, and two Silver Slugger Awards for offensive production at third base. He became the first Mets third baseman to win a Gold Glove Award and posted a lifetime OPS+ of 133, ranking among the top third basemen in MLB history.
Wright earned the nickname Captain America for his performance in the World Baseball Classic, where he led the tournament in RBIs and batting average and was named to the All-World Baseball Classic Team. The Mets named Wright the fourth captain in franchise history, joining Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and John Franco. As captain, Wright led the Mets to the World Series, hitting a go-ahead home run in the first World Series game in Queens in 15 years.
The latter part of Wright's career was marked by injuries, including spinal stenosis and additional neck and shoulder issues. After extensive rehabilitation and medical consultations, Wright announced his retirement as an active player. He returned for a ceremonial farewell at Citi Field, starting at third base and receiving a standing ovation from fans. Following his playing career, Wright became a special advisor in the Mets front office.
Wright authored the memoir "The Captain," co-written with Anthony DiComo, sharing insights into his baseball career and leadership. He is involved in charitable work through the Battle of the Badges, the David Wright Foundation, and the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, contributing to fundraising efforts. The Mets retired Wright's number and inducted him into the team's Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the franchise and New York sports.
