Darlene Zschech Biography
Darlene Zschech is an Australian singer-songwriter, worship leader, pastor, author, and speaker recognized for her influence in contemporary Christian music and worship leadership. Beginning her career at age 10 on a weekly children's television show, Zschech gained early experience in singing, dancing, and hosting before moving into professional music. She worked extensively as a session vocalist in Sydney, recording commercial jingles for brands such as McDonald's, Special K, KFC, and Diet Coke, which helped refine her vocal abilities prior to her transition into Christian music.
Zschech served as worship pastor at Hillsong Church in Sydney, overseeing the production of more than 20 albums under the Hillsong Music label and writing over 80 published worship songs, as well as authoring six books. The live worship albums achieved gold status, establishing her as a significant figure in the global worship community. Her song "Shout to the Lord" is widely regarded as a cornerstone of modern worship music, sung by millions of churchgoers worldwide each week. Originally recorded with Hillsong Church, the song has been re-recorded by numerous worship leaders and artists internationally.
In addition to "Shout to the Lord," Zschech's songwriting catalog includes "In Jesus Name," "Victor's Crown," and "Worthy Is the Lamb," among others, contributing to the repertoire of contemporary worship music. Her solo projects include "Kiss of Heaven," "Extravagant Worship," "Change Your World," "Simply Darlene," "You Are Love," and "Revealing Jesus," a live worship album recorded with Grammy Award winner Israel Houghton. "Shout to the Lord" received nominations for Song of the Year and Album of the Year at the Dove Awards, and Zschech has been recognized with nominations for Songwriter of the Year and the International Award for her influence in praise and worship.
Zschech and her husband serve as senior pastors of Hope Unlimited Church in New South Wales, which has expanded to locations in Australia, India, and several major U.S. cities. She is also a contributing songwriter with CompassionArt, a charity founded by Christian songwriter Martin Smith, collaborating with other worship writers to create music supporting charitable causes.
Beyond music, Zschech has authored six books translated for international audiences, focusing on worship, mentoring, and devotion. As a breast cancer survivor, she has shared her experiences of faith and resilience, adding a personal dimension to her ministry. Zschech's album "Testament" and companion devotional book "Testament: 30 Days of Remembrance" commemorate the enduring impact of "Shout to the Lord." The album earned a GMA Dove Award nomination for Inspirational Album of the Year, underscoring her ongoing contribution to Christian worship music and ministry.
