Dan Thomson Biography
Dr. Dan U. Thomson is a third-generation bovine veterinarian with extensive experience in cattle medicine, animal welfare, and beef cattle health management. Thomson earned a Bachelor of Science in animal science and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University, followed by a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in ruminant nutrition from South Dakota State University and Texas Tech University, respectively. Thomson is recognized internationally for his work in animal welfare, beef cattle production, and cattle health management.
Thomson's career includes roles in both clinical practice and academia. He began as an associate veterinarian with Veterinary Research and Consulting Services in Greeley, Colorado, and later served as director of animal health and well-being for Cactus Feeders in Amarillo, Texas. Thomson founded and directed the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University, where he held the Jones Professor of Production Medicine and Epidemiology position at the College of Veterinary Medicine. He was later named chair of the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University after serving on the faculty at Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Thomson provides veterinary medicine and animal health consulting to feedlots, processors, and retailers throughout the U.S. beef supply chain and serves as CEO of Production Animal Consultation, which provides veterinary care for a significant portion of cattle on feed in the United States.
Thomson's research program has received more than $36 million in funding and produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications on cattle health and welfare. He has delivered nearly 1,000 invited talks on bovine production, well-being, and medicine worldwide. Thomson served as chair of the OIE Beef Cattle Production and Animal Welfare Committee, an international group that develops beef cattle production and welfare standards. He also advises McDonald's Corporation, chairs the Animal Welfare Committee of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, serves as lead counsel for Dine Brands, and sits on the Animal Welfare Advisory Boards of Tyson Fresh Meats and JBS.
Thomson has received the National Excellence in Teaching Award from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and the Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Veterinary Medicine. He was also awarded the National BQA Educator Award from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Thomson is the founder and host of "DocTalk" on RFD-TV, a nationally aired beef cattle health veterinary television show with hundreds of episodes reaching millions of homes. His research and outreach have been featured in CBS Evening News, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and New York Times, establishing him as a trusted voice in cattle welfare and veterinary medicine.
