Chris Davenport Biography
Chris Davenport is recognized as a leading big-mountain skier and mountaineer. Named one of North America's top 25 skiers by Skiing Magazine, Davenport is a two-time extreme skiing world champion. After racing for Holderness School in New Hampshire and the University of Colorado, Davenport entered the emerging big-mountain competition scene, winning the World Extreme Skiing Championships in Alaska. He reached the podium in every Freeskiing World Tour event he entered in one season and later won a second world championship at the Red Bull Snow Thrill of Alaska. Davenport also earned an X-Games bronze medal.
Davenport has contributed to the evolution of big-mountain free-ride skiing through his competition results, media presence, and work as a spokesperson. He has appeared in more than 30 ski films by Warren Miller and Matchstick Productions and was recognized for five consecutive years by Powder Magazine with its Reader's Poll Award. As an author, Davenport wrote "Ski the 14ers: A Visual Tribute to Colorado's 14,000-Foot Peaks from the Eyes of a Ski Mountaineer" and "50 Classic Ski Descents of North America," and has contributed to several ski publications.
Davenport's mountaineering accomplishments include becoming the first person to ski all 54 of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks in less than one year. Alongside Ted and Christy Mahon, he climbed and skied the 100 highest peaks in Colorado. Davenport, with Neal Beidleman, skied 2,000 feet of the Lhotse Face on Mount Everest and reached the summit, joining a select group with documented ski descents on the Lhotse Face. He is a member of both the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame.
Davenport serves as a television commentator for ESPN, ABC Sports, and Outside Television, covering Olympic and World Cup ski events. He is a professional speaker, frequently lecturing on risk management in business and mountain sports. Davenport is an environmental advocate, involved with Protect Our Winters, a nonprofit focused on climate change policy. He is also a co-owner of Kästle Skis and a director at Protect Our Winters. Davenport's career spans ski mountaineering, environmental advocacy, and media, making him a prominent figure in the outdoor and winter sports industries.
