Brian Udell Biography
Captain Brian Udell is recognized for his extensive experience in aviation and his survival of a high-speed ejection from a U.S. fighter aircraft. Udell began flying at age nine and has accumulated more than 21,000 hours in both civil and military aircraft. He was one of 60 candidates selected for the Euro-NATO Joint Pilot Training program, where he graduated at the top of his class and received the Air Training Command Commanders Trophy. Udell was among the first Lieutenants chosen to fly the F-15E Strike Eagle, completing Strike Eagle training with the highest academic award and a near-perfect overall average. He later served as an instructor, mission commander, and earned recognition as an Air to Ground Top-Gun winner.
Udell completed over 100 combat missions in Southwest Asia and logged nearly 2,000 hours in the Strike Eagle. He received the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Aerial Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters for his combat missions over Iraq. During a training flight over the Atlantic, Udell survived an ejection from an F-15E Strike Eagle at nearly 800 mph, setting a record for the highest speed ejection from a U.S. fighter aircraft. He endured four hours in challenging conditions off the Atlantic Coast before being rescued. Despite significant injuries, Udell was able to deploy his life raft and survive until help arrived. His weapons systems officer, Captain Dennis White, did not survive the incident.
After leaving the Air Force, Udell transitioned to the commercial aviation sector and serves as a captain with Southwest Airlines. He is also active as a competition aerobatic and back-country pilot. Udell shares his experiences through a keynote presentation titled "Supersonic Survivor," focusing on aviation safety, training, teamwork, communication, and resilience. His presentations provide insights into decision-making, endurance, and human performance, making him a sought-after speaker in the aviation and corporate sectors.
