Brandon Guyer Biography
Brandon Guyer is a former Major League Baseball outfielder whose career in professional baseball is noted for resilience and a focus on mental performance. Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fifth round of the MLB Draft, Guyer advanced through the minor leagues before homering in his first major league at-bat, becoming the 108th player in league history to do so. He played for the Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Indians, contributing to multiple American League Central Division titles and an American League Championship with Cleveland.
Guyer established a reputation as a reliable outfielder and a challenging batter, particularly against left-handed pitching, with a career .274/.376/.449 slash line. Known as "La Piñata" for leading the league in hit-by-pitches multiple times, he retired as the all-time leader in hit-by-pitches per plate appearance. Antifragile doesn't just mean you're the opposite of fragile, it means that the more you get kicked around the stronger you get. You are truly unbreakable and use EVERYTHING as fuel for your growth.
Confidence literally means 'intense trust'. Not an intense trust that you'll never struggle or feel pain in your life, but an intense trust that you know you can handle anything that comes your way. How do you earn that trust? By DWYSYWD (Doing what you say you will do). The same way you earn trust in any relationship, especially the relationship with yourself!
To truly cultivate antifragile confidence it is key to:
- Accept that life is supposed to be challenging (don't fight that!).
- Be a warrior (what's important now?) not a victim (why me?).
- Get comfortable being uncomfortable (How can you do something that 'sucks' and that is out of your comfort zone every day?).
- Have a WIN or LEARN mindset.
- Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude (may be the most important!).
- Lastly, develop emotional stamina (the worse you feel and the worse things are going for you, the MORE committed you are to doing what you know helps you show up at your best, for yourself and others. This is a true superpower!).
