Booger McFarland Biography
Two-time Super Bowl champion Anthony “Booger” McFarland is a football analyst for ESPN. He has covered both college and the NFL since he joined the company in 2014, including two seasons as an analyst on Monday Night Football.
In 2020, McFarland assumed a prominent new studio role that includes college football Saturdays on ABC, ESPN+’s NFL PrimeTime alongside Chris Berman, and an analyst position on the Monday Night Countdown pregame show. Widely praised for his football insights and gregarious persona, McFarland also regularly appears on SportsCenter, Get Up, NFL Live and ESPN Radio.
McFarland has been part of ESPN’s main set for the opening rounds of the NFL Draft since 2019, and he contributes to the company’s coverage of Super Bowl week and the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In 2018, McFarland joined Monday Night Football as the series’ first-ever on-field analyst. A year later, he was elevated to the booth as the solo analyst alongside Joe Tessitore for the 50th season of Monday Night Football. With the promotion, McFarland became the first full-time African American booth analyst on MNF since 1985.
McFarland originally joined the company in 2014 as one of the SEC Network’s first commentators, focused on the Southeastern Conference. After three years, he transitioned to the ESPN on ABC college football team in 2017 where he spent a season as a studio analyst paired with host Kevin Negandhi and Mack Brown.
The No. 15 overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1999 NFL Draft, McFarland played nine NFL seasons with the Buccaneers (1999-2006) and Indianapolis Colts (2005-06). He helped anchor Tampa’s menacing defense and was part of two Super Bowl-winning teams – SB XXXVII (Tampa) and XLI (Indianapolis). During his nearly decade-long career, McFarland played 109 games, amassing 188 tackles and 22.5 sacks.
Before joining ESPN, McFarland co-hosted a popular Tampa area sports radio show on 98.7 The Fan from 2012-14.
A native of Winnsboro, La., McFarland was a First-Team All-American and All-SEC defensive tackle at LSU. He played for the Tigers from 1995-98 and graduated from Louisiana State University in 1999 with a degree in business management. McFarland was the Tigers’ honorary captain when they won the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship at the Superdome in New Orleans.
