Bo Jackson Biography
Bo Jackson is recognized in American sports history as the only professional athlete to be named an All-Star in both Major League Baseball and the National Football League. A former running back and outfielder, Jackson played football for the Los Angeles Raiders in the NFL and baseball for the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels in MLB. Before his professional career, Jackson played at Auburn University, where he rushed for 4,303 career yards, setting a school record, and set the Southeastern Conference record with an average of 6.6 yards per carry. His college achievements include the Heisman Trophy, the Walter Camp Award, and Player of the Year honors from Sporting News and United Press International. Jackson was named MVP of both the Sugar Bowl and the Liberty Bowl, and his number 34 was one of only three numbers retired by Auburn.
Jackson's professional career featured significant achievements in both baseball and football. In MLB, he was named MVP of the MLB All-Star Game after hitting a leadoff home run and finished the season with 32 home runs and 105 RBIs. In the NFL, his 221-yard rushing performance on Monday Night Football in his fifth NFL game remains a record for any Monday night game, and his 91-yard touchdown run against the Seattle Seahawks is considered one of the most iconic plays in league history. Jackson holds the NFL record for most runs of 90-plus yards from scrimmage and earned a Pro Bowl selection, making him the first athlete to receive All-Star honors in both the NFL and MLB.
Jackson's career trajectory changed following a serious hip injury during an NFL playoff game, which required a full hip replacement and ended his football career. He returned to the Chicago White Sox and homered in his first at-bat after surgery, a moment that led Nike to run a full-page ad in USA Today reading, "Bo Knew." Jackson hit 16 home runs that season, contributing to the White Sox's American League West Division title, and received the Tony Conigliaro Award. He became the first professional athlete to compete with an artificial hip and won The Sporting News AL Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Jackson became a prominent figure in American popular culture through the Nike "Bo Knows" advertising campaign, which featured him excelling in multiple sports alongside blues musician Bo Diddley. The campaign is considered one of the most successful sports marketing efforts and significantly increased Nike's cross-training shoe sales. Jackson appeared in television shows such as "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "Married... with Children," as well as the film "The Chamber." He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame, and was named the greatest athlete of all time by ESPN's Sport Science bracket.
Off the field, Jackson has engaged in philanthropy, founding Bo Bikes Bama, an annual fundraising cycling event supporting the Alabama Governor's Emergency Relief Fund for natural disaster victims, community safe rooms, and warning sirens. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in family and child development at Auburn and has served as an ambassador for the Chicago White Sox. Jackson received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for distinguished career accomplishment.
