Becca Meyers Biography
Becca Meyers is a 3x Paralympic Gold Medalist, 6x World Champion Gold Medalist, and holds 23 American Records and 10 World Records in swimming. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Meyers has Usher Syndrome and has been deaf since birth. She began using a cochlear implant, an electronic device that enables her to hear, after being profoundly deaf for her initial years. Meyers started swimming at the age of six in 2000.
In 2012, Meyers was the only deaf athlete on the U.S. Paralympic swim team at the London Games, where she won one Silver Medal (200 IM) and one Bronze Medal (100 free). Since then, her career has been marked by significant success, including winning three Gold Medals, one Silver, and setting two World Records at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. She is a 3x Trischa Zorn Award winner, recognizing her as the top disabled swimmer of the year. In addition to her athletic achievements, Meyers won the ESPY Award for Best Female Athlete with a Disability in 2015 and 2017 and is a 5x Para Pan Pac Gold Medalist as of 2018.
Meyers is also a committed disability rights advocate. She made headlines when she withdrew from the Tokyo Paralympics after being denied the necessary accommodation to bring her assistive guide, drawing attention to the inequities faced by athletes with disabilities. Outside of her athletic and advocacy efforts, Meyers enjoys baking, spending time with her guide dog, Birdie, and watching Ravens games. She is dedicated to raising awareness about the Paralympic community and advocating for the rights and recognition of disabled athletes globally.
