Avik Roy Biography
Avik Roy is an American journalist and policy advisor known for his work in health care and economic policy. Roy was educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he studied molecular biology, and Yale University School of Medicine. He began his professional career as an analyst and portfolio manager at Bain Capital, J.P. Morgan, and other firms, investing in biotechnology and health care companies. This background in both medicine and finance informs Roy's approach to public policy analysis.
Roy launched "The Apothecary," a personal blog focused on health care policy and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. His commentary has been cited by figures across the political spectrum, and his analysis of health care reform has appeared in major media outlets. Roy was appointed opinion editor for Forbes and became a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute.
As a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, Roy conducted research on the Affordable Care Act, entitlement reform, universal coverage, international health systems, and FDA policy. He authored several works, including "How Medicaid Fails the Poor," "Transcending Obamacare: A Patient-Centered Plan for Near-Universal Coverage and Permanent Fiscal Solvency," and "The Case Against Obamacare." Roy has advised multiple presidential candidates on health care and economic policy, including Marco Rubio, Rick Perry, and Mitt Romney. During the Republican primary, he served as senior advisor to former Texas Governor Rick Perry's presidential campaign, contributing to policy initiatives on poverty and financial reform.
Roy co-founded the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity, a think tank focused on expanding economic opportunity. He is recognized for his plan to achieve universal coverage through private health insurance, introduced as the Fair Care Act in Congress. In an essay for National Affairs, he argued that Bitcoin represents a strategic opportunity for the United States and proposed the establishment of a U.S. bitcoin reserve. Roy serves as chief strategy officer at Strive, focusing on expanding early disease detection products through its Semler Scientific subsidiary.
