Andy Palmer Biography
Dr. Andy Palmer CMG is a British automotive executive and engineer recognized for his leadership in electric vehicle development and automotive innovation. Palmer began his career at age 16 as an apprentice at Automotive Products Limited, progressing through the British automotive industry before joining Austin Rover, where he became chief engineer for transmission engineering and manufacturing. His career advanced significantly when he joined Nissan, where he held roles including program director, senior vice president, executive vice president, and ultimately chief operating officer.
At Nissan, Palmer played a central role in transforming the company's product lineup and leading its electric vehicle and battery business. As COO and chief planning officer, he oversaw the development and launch of the "Nissan LEAF," the world's first mass-market electric vehicle, as well as the "Nissan e-NV200" commercial vehicle. He also served as chairman of Infiniti and was recognized as a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) for his contributions to the British automotive industry.
Palmer was later appointed president and group CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda, where he led a significant transformation of the brand. During his tenure, he oversaw the launch of four core car models and nine derivatives, including the "DBX," Aston Martin's first SUV, and the "Valkyrie," the company's first mid-engined sports car. He guided Aston Martin to profitability and its listing on the London Stock Exchange. AutoExpress Magazine included him in its Hall of Fame as the "Most Influential British Person in the Global Automotive Business" and named him "Person of the Past 30 Years." He was also inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame at the British Motor Show.
After his time at Aston Martin, Palmer continued to play a key role in the global electric vehicle transition. He served as CEO and executive vice chairman of Switch Mobility, an electric bus and van company, and as interim CEO of Pod Point, a leading provider of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the UK. Palmer is the founder and CEO of Palmer Automotive Ltd and Palmer Energy, and holds chairman roles at InoBat, a Slovak developer of intelligent EV batteries; IONETIC, a battery pack technology company; and Brill Power, a battery technology provider. Academically, Palmer holds a master's degree in product engineering from the University of Warwick and a doctorate in engineering management from Cranfield University. He is a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Academy of Engineering, as well as a professor at Coventry University and an industrial professor at Warwick University.
Palmer is committed to expanding access to the automotive industry. He founded the Palmer Foundation, which funds apprenticeships for young people from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. A licensed race car driver and government advisor on transportation, Palmer remains an influential voice in the global shift to net-zero mobility, electric vehicles, and automotive technology.
