Al Harrington Biography
Al Harrington is a former professional basketball player and cannabis entrepreneur known for his work in both the sports and cannabis industries. Selected as the 25th overall pick in the NBA Draft, Harrington played 16 seasons in the National Basketball Association for the Indiana Pacers, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic, and Washington Wizards. Drafted at age 18, he became one of the youngest players in NBA history. Out of high school, he earned the Naismith Prep Player of the Year, USA Today Player of the Year, and Gatorade National Player of the Year honors. During his NBA career, Harrington averaged 13.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game and was the runner-up for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award.
After retiring from professional basketball, Harrington founded the cannabis company Viola, inspired by his grandmother's experience using cannabis to manage glaucoma and diabetes. Viola has become the largest Black-owned cannabis brand, producing premium cannabis products and raising significant capital in the legal cannabis market.
Harrington has focused on advancing social equity within the cannabis industry, recognizing the impact of the War on Drugs on Black and Brown communities. Through the Viola Cares initiative, the company emphasizes education, entrepreneurship, expungement, and incubation to support entrepreneurs of color. Harrington has committed to creating opportunities for Black entrepreneurs through business incubation and social equity programs.
Harrington has expanded Viola's presence through partnerships, including a collaboration with NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson to launch the "Iverson 01" cannabis strain. Viola became the first Black-owned multinational cannabis brand, with retail locations such as Village Hoboken in New Jersey. Harrington is an active member of the Minority Cannabis Business Association, the Cannabis Trade Federation, and Tidal Royalty's Advisory Board. His experience as an NBA player and cannabis industry leader positions him as a prominent figure in entrepreneurship, social justice, and cannabis advocacy.
