Richard Rothstein Biography
Richard Rothstein is a historian and author recognized for his expertise in housing policy and racial inequality. Rothstein serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the Economic Policy Institute and is a Senior Fellow (emeritus) at the Thurgood Marshall Institute of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Before focusing on housing, Rothstein was the national education columnist for The New York Times. His earlier books, including "Grading Education: Getting Accountability Right" and "Class and Schools: Using Social, Economic and Educational Reform to Close the Black-White Achievement Gap," established Rothstein as a prominent voice on education reform and racial equity in American schools.
Rothstein's book, "The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America," examines how federal, state, and local policies explicitly segregated metropolitan areas, creating racially homogenous neighborhoods in violation of the Constitution. The book challenges the notion that segregation in American cities resulted solely from individual prejudices or private institutions, instead documenting the role of government action. Rothstein's research, including his report "The Making of Ferguson," has contributed to the national conversation on state-sponsored residential segregation.
"The Color of Law" was a finalist for the National Book Award, named among the best books of the year by NPR and Publishers Weekly, and appeared on The New York Times bestseller list.
