Wes Jackson Biography
Wes Jackson is recognized as a leading figure in the international sustainable agriculture movement. In addition to his work as a plant geneticist, Jackson is a farmer, author, and professor emeritus of biology. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Kansas Wesleyan University, a master's degree in botany from the University of Kansas, and a doctorate in genetics from North Carolina State University. Before focusing on agricultural innovation, Jackson established and chaired one of the first environmental studies programs in the United States at California State University-Sacramento.
Jackson co-founded The Land Institute, a nonprofit educational organization in Salina, Kansas, where he developed the concept of Natural Systems Agriculture. This approach includes perennial grains, perennial polycultures, and intercropping, modeled after prairie ecosystems. Jackson addressed the challenges caused by the replacement of wild perennial plants with high-yield cereal crops, which contributed to soil erosion. His alternative proposed a mix of perennial foodgrains, derived from perennializing conventional annual crops and domesticating wild perennials, offering ecological stability and grain yields comparable to those of annual crops.
Jackson authored several influential books, including "New Roots for Agriculture," "Altars of Unhewn Stone," "Becoming Native to This Place," "Consulting the Genius of the Place: An Ecological Approach to a New Agriculture," "Nature as Measure," and "Hogs Are Up: Stories from the Land, with Digressions." He also co-edited "Meeting the Expectations of the Land: Essays in Sustainable Agriculture and Stewardship" with Wendell Berry and authored "An Inconvenient Apocalypse."
Jackson received recognition as a Pew Scholar in Conservation and the Environment, a MacArthur Fellowship, and a Right Livelihood Award, and was named among the Smithsonian's 35 people who made a difference. The work of The Land Institute has been featured in media outlets such as Atlantic Monthly, Audubon, MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour, All Things Considered, and Life magazine, which included Jackson among the 100 most important Americans of the 20th century. Serving as president of The Land Institute for four decades, Jackson advanced the organization's mission to develop perennial, ecologically sound agricultural systems. After stepping down as president, he continued to guide the Institute's leadership and contribute to the field of sustainable agriculture, leaving a legacy rooted in ecological stewardship and agricultural innovation.
