Trevor Copp and Jeff Fox are renowned contemporary dancers, choreographers, and educators who have made significant contributions to the dance community, particularly through their innovative creation, Liquid Lead Dancing, a gender-neutral system of partner dancing. This revolutionary concept was curated into the TEDx Montreal series by Alida Esmail and later picked up by TED.com, where a talk on the subject has garnered over 800,000 views. Trevor, Jeff, and Alida now tour internationally, delivering workshops and talks that promote gender equality in both dance and life. Their work has reached diverse audiences at events such as Gender & Sexuality Conferences, Feminist Festivals, and even All-Women Prisons, where they continue to inspire through the transformative power of movement.
Liquid Lead Dancing was developed alongside a full-length theater production, First Dance, which explores the development of the traditional first dance for same-sex weddings. The collaboration between Trevor and Jeff, both experienced ballroom dance instructors, evolved from their "playing fair" method of sharing the lead. This breakthrough concept has continued to evolve into a wider movement advocating for inclusivity in dance, and the pair have performed it at festivals and theaters across the globe, including at an international dance festival in Tirana, Albania.
Trevor Copp, a former full-time ballroom dance instructor and regional Fred Astaire's Canada American Style Latin/Ballroom Champion, retired from competitive dancing to pursue a career in theater. He now runs Tottering Biped Theatre, a professional theater company that emphasizes social justice through physical, socially engaged performances. Trevor has performed in over 30 international cities and national festivals and is a dedicated salsa enthusiast, coaching two pairs of World Salsa Champions and dancing across 17 countries. His passion for movement also fuels his commitment to theater, where he creates works that challenge traditional narratives.
Jeff Fox’s journey into dance began in 2000 after graduating with an honors degree in psychology. He entered the dance world almost by accident, yet quickly became a prominent instructor, choreographer, and competitor in ballroom, winning titles in American Smooth, Rhythm, Theatre Arts, and Showdance. Alongside his ballroom career, Jeff is a double black belt martial artist and creates lyrical contemporary works that highlight universal human experiences, which have been featured in festivals across Southern Ontario. Jeff and Trevor’s collaboration, sparked during their time teaching at Fred Astaire’s Canada, has grown into a powerful artistic partnership. Together with Alida Esmail, they continue to push boundaries in both dance and gender expression, crafting a new language of movement that promotes equality and inclusivity.
