Jennifer Cendaña Armas Biography
Jennifer Cendaña Armas is a multidisciplinary artist, director, and community worker whose work spans theater, poetry, music, and visual art. Cendaña Armas graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in theater, with additional theater training under Ken Schatz, Damian Popchristov, Jeffrey Horne, and SITI Theater Co. Her dance training includes work with Urban Bush Women, Ron Brown and Arcell Cabuag from Evidence, A Dance Company, Savion Glover, Jason Samuels Smith, and Aaron Tolson. She has been mentored by reg e. gaines, Jessica Hagedorn, Rha Goddess, and Willie Perdomo.
Cendaña Armas's first show, "Skinimin," was a featured one-act at the Hip-Hop Theater Festival at the Public Theater. Her production, "Twists & A Bridge," explores the effects of immigration on familial and romantic partnerships; it premiered at Summerstage and later at NY Urban Arts Festival, with an early version presented at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley. She has appeared in reg e. gaines's musical "The 88" and served as movement choreographer for the show "blak," directed by reg e. gaines.
Cendaña Armas was a featured artist at The Smithsonian Institute's Crosslines exhibit, where she premiered visual and performance work exploring identity and the African-Asian-Hispanic heritage of the Philippines. She was also a featured poet at Brooklyn Academy of Music's show "Past Is Present." Her poetry and singing have been presented internationally, including at the Peruvian North American Cultural Institute in Cusco, Ronnie Scott's Upstairs in London, Lincoln Center's La Casita, and Urban Griots at Joe's Pub.
Cendaña Armas co-directs Brooklyn Academy of Music's Art & Justice Program, where high school students develop work around social justice issues. As a teaching artist, she has facilitated workshops globally, including at Rikers Island, Stanford University, Esperanza Center for Peace & Justice, and throughout the United Kingdom. She has performed and led social justice arts workshops in the United States, Ghana, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Peru, and Chile. Cendaña Armas participated in New York Foundation of the Arts' inaugural Artist as Entrepreneur program and in "We Got Issues!", a touring production and activist circle focused on women's empowerment. Her work centers on the intersection of art, identity, and justice, contributing to the fields of performing arts, arts education, and community engagement.
