Ted Lange Biography
Ted Lange is an American actor, director, playwright, and educator whose career spans more than five decades in television, film, and theater. A Shakespearean-trained performer, Lange is widely recognized for his role as Isaac Washington on "The Love Boat" on ABC. Before achieving widespread recognition, Lange appeared in the original Broadway production of the musical "Hair," which led to a starring role on the sitcom "That's My Mama" on ABC.
Lange is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and has established a multifaceted career as a director, writer, and actor. He has portrayed Isaac Washington in five different series, including "The Love Boat," "Charlie's Angels," "Martin," "Weird Science," and "Love Boat: The Next Wave." His directing experience includes multi-camera work on sixty episodes for Entertainment Studios' "The First Family" and "Mr. Box Office," as well as twelve episodes of "Are We There Yet?" His single-camera directing credits include the independent films "Othello" and "For Love of Amy," along with television comedies such as "The New Gidget" and "The Brothers Garcia" for Universal.
Lange has written more than twenty-five plays, often focusing on African-American history, identity, and social justice. Notable works include "Four Queens — No Trump," which received critical acclaim in Los Angeles and Chicago and won the NAACP Best Play Award. He also wrote, directed, and produced "Born a Unicorn," a rock 'n' roll musical about Black Shakespearean actor Ira Aldridge. His stage acting career encompasses more than fifty plays, including South Coast Repertory's "Piano Lesson," "Sunshine Boys," "Biloxi Blues," and a national tour of "Driving Miss Daisy."
Lange has received several honors, including the NAACP Renaissance Man Theatre Award, the Heroes and Legends HAL Lifetime Achievement Award, the Dramalogue Award, the Oakland Ensemble Theatre's Paul Robeson Award, and the James Cagney Directing Fellow Scholarship Award from the American Film Institute. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his contributions to television. As an educator, Lange has served as an adjunct associate professor at the School of Cinema-Television at USC, teaching film directing, and has lectured on Shakespeare and acting at high schools and colleges nationwide. Lange is recognized within the Black theater community for his work as a producer, director, and writer, bringing stories about the African-American experience to the stage.
