Shelley Long is an actress, comedian, and singer known for her work in television comedy and film. Long developed her skills at Northwestern University and later joined Second City in Chicago. She began her career writing, producing, and co-hosting the television program "Sorting It Out" on WMAQ-TV, earning three Regional Emmy Awards for her contributions. Long was also active on her high school speech team, competing in the Indiana High School Forensic Association and winning the National Forensic League's National Championship in Original Oratory. These early experiences established a foundation for her career in entertainment and comedy.
Long gained national recognition for her portrayal of Diane Chambers on "Cheers" on NBC. Her performance was central to the show's success, with the dynamic between Diane Chambers and Sam Malone, played by Ted Danson, becoming a hallmark of the sitcom. For her role, Long received five Emmy nominations, winning the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and earned two Golden Globe Awards. She also received consecutive Q Awards for Best Actress in a Quality Comedy Series.
During her tenure on "Cheers," Long appeared in feature films such as "Irreconcilable Differences," "The Money Pit," and "Outrageous Fortune." In "Irreconcilable Differences," she portrayed a would-be writer navigating personal and professional challenges, earning award recognition for her performance. Long starred opposite Tom Hanks in "The Money Pit" and appeared alongside Bette Midler in "Outrageous Fortune." Her film credits also include the family comedy "Troop Beverly Hills" and the role of Carol Brady in "The Brady Bunch Movie."
Long returned to "Cheers" for its series finale, earning another Emmy nomination for her role as Diane Chambers. She reprised the character in three episodes of the spin-off "Frasier," which led to an additional guest star Emmy nomination. Long also played DeDe Pritchett on the ABC comedy series "Modern Family," introducing her comedic talents to a new generation.
