Rubens Barrichello Biography
Rubens Barrichello is a Brazilian racing driver and broadcaster recognized for his enduring presence in Formula One. Barrichello competed in Formula One across 19 seasons, twice finishing runner-up in the World Drivers' Championship with Ferrari and securing 11 Grand Prix victories. His 322 Grand Prix starts set a record for longevity in the sport, highlighting his resilience and commitment to motorsport.
Barrichello began his racing career with five karting titles in Brazil before moving to Europe, where he won the Formula Vauxhall Lotus championship and the British Formula 3 Championship, surpassing competitors such as David Coulthard. He finished third in the Formula 3000 championship and joined the Jordan Formula One team for his debut season. Early in his Formula One career, Barrichello experienced both promise and adversity, including a serious crash at the San Marino Grand Prix that underscored the risks of the sport. The same weekend marked the loss of his mentor, Ayrton Senna, which had a lasting impact on Barrichello's perspective.
Barrichello's tenure with Ferrari marked a defining period, where he partnered with Michael Schumacher and achieved his first Formula One victory at the German Grand Prix. He contributed to five consecutive World Constructors' Championships for Ferrari, with 51 podium finishes in 85 Grands Prix. Barrichello twice achieved the feat of winning a race from pole position with the fastest lap, at the British Grand Prix and Italian Grand Prix. After Ferrari, he raced for Honda and Brawn GP, where he won races in Valencia and Monza and finished third in the World Championship.
Later, Barrichello joined Williams and was appointed chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association. Upon retiring from Formula One, he had accumulated 11 wins, 14 pole positions, 17 fastest laps, and 68 podiums, the latter being a record for a driver who did not win the World Championship. He also became the highest-scoring Brazilian driver in Formula One history, surpassing Ayrton Senna's career points total.
Barrichello continued his motorsport career in endurance racing, finishing runner-up at the 24 Hours of Daytona with Wayne Taylor Racing, and in stock car racing, where he became a two-time champion of the Stock Car Pro Series with Full Time Sports.
Beyond his racing achievements, Barrichello has established himself as a broadcaster and media personality. He became a familiar face on TV Globo, covering Formula One race weekends, conducting interviews, and providing commentary. He later co-hosted the motorsport YouTube channel "Acelerados." Barrichello's extensive experience in Formula One and other racing disciplines positions him as a knowledgeable and respected figure in motorsport media and broadcasting.
