Ron Young Biography
Ronald D. Young Jr. is a former U.S. Army chief warrant officer and Apache helicopter pilot known for his service during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Young joined the Army after studying mechanical engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University and trained on the AH-64 Apache Longbow helicopter. He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division's 227th Aviation Regiment at Fort Hood, Texas. An Eagle Scout, Young demonstrated a commitment to service and leadership prior to his military career.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Young was deployed to Iraq and was shot down during a combat mission near Karbala. He and copilot Chief Warrant Officer David Williams evaded capture for several hours before being taken prisoner. Young and other prisoners of war were held for 23 days until a rescue operation by Marines from D Company, 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in Samarra led to their release following the fall of Baghdad.
Young received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal with Valor, and Prisoner of War Ribbon for his military service. His experiences brought national attention, leading to roles such as CNN special contributor for The War on Terror, participation in CBS's "Amazing Race," and service as a White House political appointee for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Young also served in the Georgia Army National Guard as an Army aviation safety officer, maintenance officer, and the state's Counterdrug Taskforce operations officer.
After his military career, Young worked as a search and rescue pilot in the offshore oil fields of the Gulf and as a helicopter EMS pilot. With more than 25 years of flight experience, Young later attended seminary at Liberty University. He shares his experiences as a motivational speaker, focusing on resilience, integrity, and duty, and often connects with audiences in law enforcement and correctional services.
