For years, we’ve been told that everything is going to be okay. If we just dig deep, get scrappy, and try a little harder, then all of our collective work problems will disappear. How’s that working out?
Spoiler alert: It isn’t. Because we’re facing some pretty tough circumstances—systemic problems that are deeply rooted in harmful behaviors and beliefs. We all want to think that it can get better if we just try our best, but reality is a bit more complicated than that.
In this talk, we’ll look at both humorous and not-so-humorous examples of workplace culture gone wrong. Then, we’ll talk about the three things people need to feel in order to have a change to be happy at work: safe, respected, and valued. Finally, we’ll talk about the practical steps all leaders can actually do to build a truly positive workplace culture.
Learning Objectives:
Good leaders have good values. It really is that simple.
A leader with well-defined values knows who they are. They consciously make decisions based on those values and their integrity is unimpeachable. Leaders without solid values, on the other hand, are frustrating to work with: One day they’re telling you that there’s no budget, and the next they’re splurging on something that seems unnecessary.
This type of inconsistent and erratic behavior is made possible by weak or undefined values. They don’t know what they stand for, and, as a result, they make seemingly irrational decisions that confuse their colleagues. At worst, their decisions can be seen as greedy or opportunistic, and at best, they’re unreliable and upsetting.
In this talk, you'll learn an ironclad process to define your personal core values.
