Regina Barzilay Biography
Regina Barzilay is the School of Engineering Distinguished Professor for AI and Health in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She serves as the AI faculty lead for the MIT Jameel Clinic, the institute's center for machine learning in health. Barzilay's research focuses on machine learning models for clinical applications and molecular modeling, with an emphasis on drug discovery. Earlier in her career, she worked on natural language processing and computational linguistics, including projects to translate ancient languages. Barzilay earned a doctorate in computer science from Columbia University and completed postdoctoral research at Cornell University.
Barzilay shifted her research focus to medical artificial intelligence following her experience surviving breast cancer. She has since concentrated on developing AI systems for drug development and early cancer diagnosis. Barzilay collaborated with researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital to develop "Mirai," a deep learning model that predicts breast cancer risk from mammograms. The model is deployed in hospitals internationally. She also developed "Sybil," a deep learning model that predicts lung cancer risk from low-dose CT scans, which is being implemented in clinical settings worldwide.
In the area of drug discovery, Barzilay worked with MIT Jameel Clinic Life Sciences faculty lead Jim Collins to use AI to screen more than 100 million molecules, leading to the discovery of halicin, the first antibiotic identified by artificial intelligence. This work was published in Cell and demonstrated the potential of AI in accelerating antibiotic discovery amid antimicrobial resistance challenges. Barzilay's group also developed "Boltz-1" and "Boltz-2," open-source biomolecular structure prediction models that achieved accuracy comparable to AlphaFold3, supporting biomedical research and drug development.
Barzilay has received several honors for her contributions to artificial intelligence and healthcare, including a MacArthur Fellowship, an ACL fellowship, and an AAAI fellowship. She was the inaugural recipient of the AAAI Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity and has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering. Barzilay is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been recognized on the TIME100 AI List. She received the IEEE Frances E. Allen Medal for her work in developing machine learning algorithms that have advanced human language technology and impacted the field of medicine. Barzilay's career demonstrates the transformative role of artificial intelligence in medicine and healthcare innovation.
