Nancy Lieberman Biography
Nancy Lieberman, known as "Lady Magic," is recognized as a pioneering figure in basketball. A Basketball Hall of Famer, two-time Olympian, three-time All-American, two-time collegiate national champion, and two-time National Player of the Year at Old Dominion University, Lieberman established a legacy of breaking barriers in women's basketball. At age 18, she earned a silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Montreal, becoming the youngest basketball player, male or female, in Olympic history to medal. Lieberman led Old Dominion University to consecutive Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women championships and is a two-time recipient of the Wade Trophy and Honda Sports Award for basketball, as well as the Honda Broderick Cup for best collegiate female athlete in America.
Lieberman's professional basketball career included becoming the first woman to play for a men's professional team as a member of the Springfield Flame in the United States Basketball League. She played in the inaugural season of the WNBA for the Phoenix Mercury and later became the oldest WNBA player with the Detroit Shock at age 50. Lieberman was also the first woman to earn $1 million as a basketball player. Her Hall of Fame honors include induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, New York City Basketball Hall of Fame, Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and Hampton Roads Hall of Fame.
As a coach, Lieberman became the first female head coach of a men's professional basketball team with the NBA G League's Texas Legends and later served as an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings, becoming the second woman to join an NBA coaching staff. In the BIG3 league, she led Team Power to a championship, making her the first female coach to win a title in a men's professional league. Lieberman's coaching career spans the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, and BIG3, contributing to the advancement of women in basketball coaching and leadership roles.
Beyond her playing and coaching career, Lieberman has worked as a broadcaster, author, and motivational speaker. She has served as an analyst for ESPN/ABC covering the NBA, WNBA, and NCAA Women's Basketball, and has provided commentary for NBA-TV, NBC, and NFL Network. Lieberman has written for Dallas Morning News, The New York Times, and USA Today. Her publications include the autobiography "Lady Magic," two editions of "Basketball for Women," and "Playbook for Success." In her writing and speaking engagements, Lieberman addresses leadership, teamwork, diversity, equity and inclusion, and the intersection of sports and business, and has worked with organizations such as Nike, Bank of America, FedEx, and JP Morgan.
Lieberman founded Nancy Lieberman Charities, which uses basketball clinics and camps to educate youth on drug and alcohol awareness, peer pressure, and the importance of education. She also leads a philanthropic initiative to build Dream Courts in urban neighborhoods, providing more than 2 million children with safe spaces for physical activity. Lieberman remains a significant figure in sports, recognized for her contributions to basketball, coaching, broadcasting, and community engagement.
