Marlo Thomas is an American actress, producer, author, and social activist recognized for her influential contributions to television, culture, and philanthropy. Thomas gained national attention as the star and executive producer of the television series "That Girl," notable for portraying television's first single woman living alone. Her performance in the series earned her a Golden Globe and four Emmy nominations during its five-year run. Prior to her television success, Thomas began her career in regional theater and was cast by director Mike Nichols as the lead in the London production of Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park."
Thomas continued to expand her creative reach in both screen and publishing after "That Girl." She studied at the Actors Studio with Lee Strasberg and acknowledged his influence when she received the Emmy Award for Best Dramatic Actress for the TV movie "Nobody's Child." Thomas has appeared on Broadway in Elaine May's "Relatively Speaking" and off-Broadway in Joe DiPietro's "Clever Little Lies." Her film credits include a role in the heist movie "Ocean's Eight."
As an author and creator, Thomas developed the children's album and TV show "Free to Be… You and Me," which became a platinum album, an Emmy Award-winning television special, and a stage show. She has produced several bestselling books, including "Free to Be You and Me," "The Right Words at the Right Time," "Thanks and Giving: All Year Long"—which became a Grammy-winning CD—her memoir "Growing Up Laughing," and "It Ain't Over Till It's Over: Reinventing Your Life and Realizing Your Dreams—Anytime, at Any Age."
Thomas's achievements have been recognized with three Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Peabody Award, a Grammy Award, and induction into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alliance for Women in Media at the Gracie Awards.
In addition to her entertainment career, Thomas is a co-founder of the Ms. Foundation for Women, which established Take Our Daughters to Work Day, and she initiated a nationwide bullying prevention campaign. As the daughter of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas, she serves as National Outreach Director for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, supporting children with life-threatening illnesses. Thomas's career spans acting, writing, producing, and activism, establishing her as a significant figure in entertainment and social advocacy.
