Mark Tercek Biography
Mark Tercek is recognized for his work at the intersection of finance, conservation, and corporate sustainability. Before joining The Nature Conservancy, Tercek served as a partner and managing director at Goldman Sachs, where he worked for 24 years. He led the firm's environmental strategy and its Environmental Markets Group, and also headed business units including Corporate Finance, Equity Capital Markets, Consumer/Healthcare, and Leadership Development.
Tercek served as CEO of The Nature Conservancy, a global environmental nonprofit organization operating in all 50 states and 72 countries. During his tenure, the organization expanded its initiatives in science, technology, and impact investing, including the launch of NatureVest and an urban conservation program. The organization also completed a significant capital campaign and invested in systems to optimize performance among its global staff. Tercek's leadership at The Nature Conservancy has been profiled in The New Yorker, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Wall Street Journal, and The Atlantic.
Tercek advocates for the concept of natural capital, emphasizing the value of nature for its ecosystem services such as clean air, water, productive soils, and climate stability. He is the co-author of "Nature's Fortune: How Business and Society Thrive by Investing in Nature," a Washington Post and Publishers Weekly bestselling book. Tercek has served on the New York State 2100 Commission, the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, and the National Petroleum Council, offering guidance on environmental issues related to oil and natural gas.
As a public speaker on environmental topics, Tercek has addressed audiences at the World Economic Forum, TED, the Aspen Ideas Festival, and Bloomberg Sustainability Summits. With support from the Audacious Project at TED, Tercek and his colleagues at The Nature Conservancy launched a plan to protect millions of square kilometers of ocean. He has also been a member of the faculty at New York University Stern School of Business.
