Lou Gramm Biography

Lou Gramm is an American rock singer and songwriter known for his work as co-founder and original frontman of the rock band Foreigner. As lead singer and co-writer for Foreigner, Gramm contributed to the band's global album sales of more than 80 million and helped achieve over 20 Top 40 hits, including "Cold as Ice," "Juke Box Hero," "I Want to Know What Love Is," "Urgent," and "Midnight Blue." His vocal performances and songwriting have played a significant role in shaping classic rock and arena rock music.

Before joining Foreigner, Gramm performed with several regional acts and gained national attention with the band Black Sheep, which released music on Capitol Records and Chrysalis Records. Foreigner founder Mick Jones invited Gramm to audition for the band after hearing Black Sheep's first album. Gramm went on to co-write many of Foreigner's hits with Jones and provided lead vocals on all of the band's charted songs during the 1970s and 1980s, including "Feels Like the First Time," "Hot Blooded," "Dirty White Boy," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," and "I Don't Want to Live Without You."

In addition to his work with Foreigner, Gramm has maintained a solo career. His debut solo album, "Ready or Not," featured the hit "Midnight Blue," followed by "Long Hard Look," which included the Top 10 single "Just Between You and Me." Gramm also performed the title song from the movie soundtrack "The Lost Boys," titled "Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)." He chronicled his life and career in the autobiography "Juke Box Hero: My Five Decades in Rock 'n' Roll." His third solo album, "Released," continued his work as a solo artist.

Gramm faced a significant health challenge when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which required complex surgery and led to a lengthy recovery. The surgery affected his pituitary gland, resulting in substantial weight gain and a temporary hiatus from performing. Despite these challenges, Gramm returned to the stage, adapting his performances as needed.

Gramm, together with Mick Jones, is inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Foreigner. With a career spanning five decades, Gramm continues to tour with his own band and occasionally appears with Foreigner, contributing to the legacy of classic rock and live performance.
