Liza Donnelly Biography
When Liza Donnelly joined The New Yorker in 1982, she was the youngest cartoonist on staff and one of only three women to hold the job. She's still there, continuing to make significant contributions to the field through her cartoons and writing. Over her career, Donnelly has developed a portfolio of work that not only captures the essence of social commentary through art but also spans across various media, including her contributions to major publications like The New York Times, Washington Post, and Forbes, as well as broadcast outlets like CNN and CBS News.
In 2005, Donnelly wrote "Funny Ladies: The New Yorker's Greatest Women Cartoonists and Their Cartoons," a definitive book about her colleagues. She has also authored and edited 18 books, with the notable "Very Funny Ladies: The New Yorker’s Women Cartoonists" currently being developed into a documentary. Her other works include "Sex and Sensibility," "Cartoon Marriage," a collaborative piece with her husband Michael Maslin, a series of dinosaur books for children, and the insightful "When Do They Serve the Wine? The Folly, Flexibility and Fun of Being a Woman."
Donnelly's role as a cultural envoy for the U.S. State Department has taken her around the world to promote discussions on freedom of speech and women's rights. She continues to educate through her position as a visiting scholar at Vassar College for the 2023-2024 academic year and through online classes with the 92Y on the history of cartoons in The New Yorker. Additionally, Donnelly manages the Substack newsletter "Seeing Things," where she shares her perspectives on current events and the role of cartoons in media. Her commitment to fostering global dialogue and understanding is also evident in her engagements at international platforms like the United Nations, various TEDx events, and cultural festivals.
