Liv Boeree Biography
Liv Boeree is a British science communicator, astrophysicist, and professional poker player known for her expertise in game theory, risk analysis, and science communication. Boeree earned a first-class degree in astrophysics from the University of Manchester. She began her poker career after participating in a reality poker television show in the United Kingdom and went on to become a regular host on various poker coverage programs before achieving success as a player.
Boeree is a World Series of Poker (WSOP) and European Poker Tour (EPT) champion, and is the only female player to have won both a WSOP bracelet and an EPT event. She held the top ranking among female poker players for multiple years, securing both EPT and WSOP championship titles and earning more than $4 million on the international circuit. Boeree set a record for the largest single cash by a female poker player with a $2.8 million win at the WSOP in the Bahamas.
Boeree is recognized for her ability to explain complex scientific and mathematical concepts to broad audiences. She has appeared as a television presenter on major networks including Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and BBC. Her hosting credits include "UK and Ireland Poker Tour," "The Mind Control Freaks" on Discovery Channel, "MindGamers" on Red Bull TV, and "Weird Earth" on The Weather Channel. She has also appeared on Channel 4's "Codex" and ITV's "Golden Balls." As a keynote speaker, Boeree delivered a TED Talk on applying scientific thinking to everyday life, and a second TED Talk, "The Dark Side of Competition in AI," which introduced the concept of "Moloch's trap" in game theory and its implications for artificial intelligence and societal challenges.
Boeree co-founded Raising for Effective Giving, a research and advisory nonprofit that applies Effective Altruism principles to identify and support high-impact charities. The organization has directed over $12 million to global causes. Boeree has spoken at Oxford, Cambridge, Cheltenham Science Festival, WebSummit Dublin, and Effective Altruism Global, among other events.
With a background in astrophysics, Boeree works as an artist and researcher focusing on the intersection of game theory, technology, and risk. She hosts the "Win-Win Podcast," which explores strategies for fostering healthier relationships with competition in society. On the podcast, Boeree interviews philosophers, technologists, scientists, founders, and public thinkers to examine how win-lose systems can be transformed into win-win outcomes. Her career spans science communication, professional poker, and public speaking, offering insights into decision-making, risk management, and the application of scientific principles to real-world challenges.
