John Zimmer Biography
John Zimmer, known for his entrepreneurial mindset and innovative approach to transportation, co-founded Lyft, an on-demand transportation company. Zimmer's journey in the industry started with his co-founding of Zimride, a ridesharing platform aimed at college campuses, with Logan Green in 2007, while he was still working at Lehman Brothers. Zimride made its debut at Cornell University and quickly gained traction, signing up 20% of the student body within six months of its launch.
By April 2012, Zimride had evolved into something much bigger, eventually being renamed as Lyft. With $7.5 million in funding and operations at over 125 universities, it was clear that Zimmer's vision for a more connected and convenient mode of transportation had resonated with many. The official launch of Lyft as a service of Zimride took place in the summer of 2012, marking a significant milestone in Zimmer's career.
Signifying his dedication to the company, Zimmer opted not to take a salary during the first three years of Lyft's operation. However, in March 2023, Zimmer announced his decision to step down as Lyft president in June of that year, transitioning to the role of vice-chair of the board of directors. In 2025, Zimmer stepped down from the board to pursue his new venture, Yes&, which he co-founded and serves as CEO.
