Dr. John F. Kelly, Ph.D., ABPP, is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School, serving as the university's first endowed professor in addiction medicine. Kelly earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Tufts University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California, San Diego. His career centers on understanding addiction as a treatable medical condition and improving outcomes for individuals affected by substance use disorders.
Kelly is the founder and director of the Recovery Research Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital, program director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service, and associate director of the Center for Addiction Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also leads the National Center on Youth Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery at Massachusetts General Hospital and serves as chief of the Division of Addiction Treatment and Prevention across the Mass General Brigham Academic Medical Centers Department of Psychiatry. Through these roles, Kelly has developed infrastructure for addiction research and clinical care that impacts patients and communities locally and nationally.
His clinical and research work focuses on addiction treatment and recovery, including the translation and implementation of evidence-based practices, reducing stigma associated with addiction, addiction and criminal justice, and theories and mechanisms of behavior change. Kelly co-authored a Cochrane systematic review on the efficacy of peer support programs, analyzing studies that found high-certainty evidence that manualized twelve-step facilitation programs produced higher rates of continuous abstinence compared to other established treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. He also co-edited the book "Addiction Recovery Management: Theory, Research, and Practice" and has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, chapters, and books in addiction medicine. Kelly contributed as an author to the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health.
Kelly is a co-founder and inaugural president of the American Board of Addiction Psychology, a past president of the American Psychological Association Society of Addiction Psychology, and a fellow of the American Psychological Association. He has served as a consultant to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the National Institutes of Health, as well as internationally to the World Health Organization and the United Nations, representing the United States at summits on substance use treatment, stigma, and discrimination. Kelly has received state, national, and international lifetime achievement and distinguished scientist awards for his work, including the National Council for Mental Wellbeing's Lifetime Achievement Award. As a speaker and public advocate, Kelly addresses addiction medicine, substance use disorder treatment, and recovery science for audiences across sectors.
