Dr. Alice Berger is a cancer geneticist and associate professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, where she also holds an appointment in the Herbold Computational Biology Program and serves as a member of the Translational Data Science Integrated Research Center. Berger specializes in cancer genomics, precision oncology, and the discovery of genetic alterations that drive cancer. Her research focuses on translating genetic insights into new drug targets and biomarkers to advance patient care.
The Berger laboratory aims to enable precision medicine by systematically uncovering molecular alterations in cancer, determining the function of variant alleles, and understanding how these alleles influence response to targeted or immune-based therapies. Berger has developed methods to assess the functional consequences of gene alterations and their roles in cancer development. She identified that the gene RIT1 is frequently mutated in lung adenocarcinoma and demonstrated that RIT1 mutations contribute to cancer formation. Berger's research continues to explore the function of RIT1 and the molecular pathways it regulates, with the objective of identifying new therapeutic targets. Her laboratory employs proteomic approaches and genome-wide CRISPR knockout screens to analyze the functional similarities and differences between KRAS and RIT1, aiming to identify critical effectors for potential therapeutic intervention.
Berger's work has influenced clinical practice, including collaborative analysis of mutations in lung adenocarcinoma that revealed 5 percent of patients have a rare mutation in the MET gene. This discovery has led to the use of MET inhibitors for lung cancer patients with these mutations. Berger has also contributed to understanding lung cancer in individuals who have never smoked, focusing on genome sequencing of lung tumors in women with no history of smoking as part of the Women's Health Initiative. Her research suggests that cancer development mechanisms may differ between never-smokers and smokers, and that characterizing somatic genetic alterations in tumors from never-smokers may reveal new opportunities for early detection and treatment.
Berger has received funding from organizations such as the Lung Cancer Foundation of America, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society to support her research in cancer biology and paralog synthetic lethality. She has been recognized by Puget Sound Business Journal as a Woman of Influence. Berger holds a joint professorship at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington.
